Tattoo Aftercare: The First Few Days

Prepare for the burn

Many clients describe the first hours after a tattoo as a burning or scratching sensation. Yes — that’s normal. A fresh tattoo is basically an open wound, so a little sting is expected.

Depending on the size and placement of your tattoo, I’ll cover it with either plastic wrap or Second Skin. This protection is only meant for the first few hours, or at most up to 24 hours. Leaving it longer can trap bacteria inside — and trust me, we don’t want that!

When it’s time to remove the wrap/Second Skin:

  • Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, antibacterial soap.

  • Do not scrub. Just let the water and your hand do the work.

  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel or let it air-dry naturally.

  • Apply a thin layer of your recommended tattoo cream.

Cleaning & Moisturizing

  • Wash your tattoo 2–3 times a day.

  • Always wash before applying cream.

  • Use a small amount of moisturizer — overdoing it can make the tattoo soggy, which might lead to fading or more grey tones.

🚫 What NOT to Do (the big no-nos)

  • No swimming (sea, pool, or hot tubs).

  • No saunas or long baths.

  • No gym for a couple of days (sweat and friction slow healing).

  • Avoid the sun — UV light damages fresh tattoos.

  • Don’t scratch or peel the tattoo. Let the skin shed naturally.

  • Avoid tight or wool clothing that rubs against the area.

  • Watch out for pets. We love them, but their fur and bacteria can irritate or infect a fresh tattoo.
